Shawn Levy's review is really the only one you need.  While admitting that The Matrix is difficult to describe with words, he makes a valliant effort to do just that without giving away any surprises.

Janet Maslin has written a solid review that only gives away a little of the plot.  Read this before the film if you are still undecided about seeing it.

Roger Ebert provides the most comprehensive review.  Unfortunately, he cannot do this without spoiling the movie, so he precedes the fourth paragraph with a warning to this effect.  Read this one only after you have seen the movie.

We lost the links to numerous reviews to protect the guilty.  Far too many reviewers have figured out that they can make a living panning any movie they weren't in the mood for when they watched it.  This avoids the need to reorient their mind during the movie or to watch it again later.  Quite a few assumed The Matrix was Rambo meets Robocop and decided that the plot was incomprehensible when it required them to activate their brain in order to follow it.

James Poniewozik has a different angle on the movie that is worth considering.  See the movie first so his points make more sense.
